Tāi-chì lóng sī lí pìⁿ – - chhut-lâi ê, cha-po·-kíaⁿ káⁿ chò káⁿ tng, hō· lí bōe cháu síam leh!

You’re the one who messed it up; a man has to own up to what he’s done, and you can’t escape from that.

Káⁿ chò káⁿ tng chiah sī lâm-chú-hàn.

A real man takes responsibility for what he’s done.

(Fang, Nan-qiang. Yaqi Jiang Taiyu: Diyi Ji. Taipei County Xindian City: Kaituo, 1997. P. 156)

Lâm-chú-hàn = (be) a real man; manly [see also Cha-po∙thé]

Ma came to power, and now gas has gotten so damned expensive.  We have no choice but to ride a bike…

Going uphill is really tiring…

Go, daddy, go! [Literally, "Add gas/oil!]

Don’t  say “add gas”! When daddy hears “add gas”, his arms and legs go weak!

Chicken coop city

September 1, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I just found out that the old name for Keelung (基隆, or, in Taiwanese, Ke-lâng) was Ke-lang (雞籠), meaning “chicken cage” or “chicken coop”.  Fascinating. Still like “Beat-dog City” the best, though.
